Hull City 2-0 Manchester United: Tigers Mark Premier League Return with Statement Win

Hull City announced their return to the Premier League in spectacular fashion, beating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

The Tigers, back in the top flight after a nine-year absence, produced a confident and energetic display to claim a famous opening-day victory. Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored in the first half as Hull exposed Manchester United's weaknesses from set pieces

Semi Ajayi Gives Hull the Lead

Hull started with intensity and quickly put Manchester United under pressure.

The breakthrough arrived in the 17th minute. After a dangerous corner, goalkeeper Senne Lammens made an important save from Oli McBurnie, but the loose ball fell kindly for Semi Ajayi, who reacted quickest to fire Hull into the lead.

The goal sent the home crowd into celebration and gave the newly promoted side belief that they could produce a major upset.

Nobel Mendy Doubles the Advantage

Manchester United struggled to deal with Hull's set-piece threat, and the Tigers punished them again before half-time.

In the 38th minute, Regan Slater delivered an excellent free kick into the penalty area, where Nobel Mendy rose to head the ball beyond the United goalkeeper.

At 2-0, Hull had a commanding advantage and fully deserved their lead after an impressive first-half performance.

Manchester United Fail to Respond

Michael Carrick's Manchester United entered the match with optimism after finishing third in the previous Premier League campaign, but they produced little to justify those expectations.

United had opportunities after the break, while Marcus Rashford was introduced for his first competitive appearance since late 2024. However, Hull remained organised and defended their advantage effectively.

Bryan Mbeumo came closest to getting United back into the contest when his effort in the 78th minute was saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.

United ultimately finished without a goal, while Hull celebrated one of the biggest victories in their recent history.

A Historic Premier League Statement

The victory was particularly significant because Hull had never previously beaten Manchester United in the Premier League, having gone 10 meetings without a win against the Red Devils.

Their return to the top flight could hardly have gone better. After securing promotion through the Championship play-offs in May, Hull have now immediately shown that they intend to compete rather than simply make up the numbers.

For Manchester United, meanwhile, the defeat represents a major early setback for Carrick and his team. Their defensive problems at set pieces were exposed twice, while their attacking play lacked the cutting edge required to break down a determined Hull defence.

What the Result Means

Hull City leave the opening weekend with three points and enormous confidence after one of the most memorable Premier League returns imaginable.

Manchester United, on the other hand, must quickly regroup. Their next league fixture is at home against Ipswich Town on August 29, giving Carrick an immediate opportunity to demand a response from his players.

Hull City 2-0 Manchester United will be remembered as a statement victory for the Tigers — and a warning to the rest of the Premier League that the newly promoted side are ready for the challenge.
